Shillong has grown in size and importance, because it was the civil station of Khasi Hills and Jaintia in 1864 by the British. In 1874, the formation of Assam as a Chief Superintendent province, was chosen to host the new government, due to its location between the Brahmaputra and the Surma valleys and much more because the climate of Shillong was much cooler than tropical India.
